Utility companies in the US are on a path to digitize their grids, implementing substation technologies aimed at automation and control. These companies are at the forefront of addressing climate change, air pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve these goals, utility companies are aiming to harness the power of data, analytics and machine virtualization to make the grid safer and more reliable for customers.
But what does this look like for talent acquisition and the renewable energy job market?
In 2021 the US transmission, distribution and energy storage sector saw strong growth in smart grids. Smart grids are electricity networks that use digital and other technologies to efficiently manage energy supply and demand. The US Department of Energy says smart grids outpaced virtually every other technology in the sector, growing jobs by 4.9%. The electric power generation sector also saw big gains for wind energy and solar power. Solar saw the biggest growth of all power generation technologies. It added 17,212 jobs and grew 5.4% in 2021.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2020 also identifies renewable energy engineers as a top in-demand role for the energy utilities and technologies industry. We are also seeing Renewable Project Developers, Data Analysts and specialists in A.I. and machine learning are among the other jobs in high demand in this space.
